What is the procedure of LASIK?
In LASIK is a simple surgical procedure which takes place in about 15 minutes or even less. It takes place in three steps.
First, a partial and thin cut by an oscillating blade is made on front surface of cornea. Patient is then appropriately positioned under laser which is focused to vaporize some exposed corneal tissues and as such reshaping of cornea is done to correct refractive errors. After completion of this reshaping process, flap over cornea is closed and then this reshaped cornea focuses clear images on retina.
What are the qualifying criteria for undergoing LASIK operation?
LASIK Laser therapy is an effective surgical procedure for correcting vision errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. However, it is to be noted that this procedure is not suitable in every case and patients need to qualify for certain criteria as follow for getting maximum desired outcomes:
1.Patient should be above 18 years of age.
2.His refractive index, i.e., power of spectacle lens, should be stable for preceding one year.
3.His cornea and retina should be in a healthy state.
A thorough examination for about 4 to 5 hours is carried out to ascertain whether laser therapy is suitable for particular patient or not.
How does this LASIK therapy for vision correction work?
LASIK procedure works by using a laser beam for reshaping corneal surface so as to precisely focus light rays on retina. This laser specifically involves using UV rays of a particular wavelength which is cold in nature, thereby avoiding any burns or damage to tissues. These rays basically break down molecular bonds existing between various cells inside corneal tissues so that required amount of tissues can be vaporized layer after layer in a controlled manner.
•In patients suffering from myopia, central corneal tissues are vaporized to reduce curvature of cornea and correct vision.
•In patients suffering from hyperopia, corneal tissues are vaporized and removed from periphery so as to increase curvature of cornea and impart a clear vision.
•In astigmatism, selected corneal tissues are removed so as to even out curvature, thereby correcting vision.
What benefits are offered by laser therapy for vision correction?
Numerous benefits are offered to patients by this laser corrective therapy:
•A clear vision is imparted to patients, thereby relieving them from all hassles involved in wearing glasses or lenses.
•Individuals have enhanced job opportunities after getting a corrected vision.
•Individuals can also indulge in numerous recreational activities and adventure sports with their improved vision and enhanced self-confidence.
•Scope of peripheral eyesight is also increased considerably as compared to normal glasses.
•It is also a better option in terms of eye health as compared to prolonged use of contact lenses.
